The Royal Society endorses researchers in the natural and medical sciences. Like all academic endorsers, it offers a 3-year path to ILR regardless of whether you apply for Talent or Promise — the fastest settlement route in the entire visa. You qualify via a UK academic appointment, a recognised fellowship, an endorsed grant, or peer review.
What your pack must include.
- PhD or equivalent research experience — the minimum bar for peer review
- CV structured around research impact: publications, citations, grant income, mentorship
- Letter of personal recommendation from an eminent UK-based resident — mandatory and critical
- Additional 2 letters from internationally recognised figures in the field
- Evidence of publication record in top-quartile international journals (Nature, Science, Cell, PNAS, discipline-leading venues)
- Evidence of international collaboration: co-authored work across institutions, invited talks abroad, visiting positions

- ✦Citations and h-index at or above discipline norms for career stage
- ✦First- or senior-authorship on high-impact publications — not just participation
- ✦PI or Co-I roles on competitive external grants
- ✦Invited lectures at flagship international conferences or at Royal Society events
- ✦Research leadership: independent group, students supervised, collaborations led
Where applications fail.
- ×UK-based recommender is mandatory — peer review without one is rejected
- ×Teaching-focused roles weighted less than research (if applying via peer review)
