For engineers
whose research
ships.
The Royal Academy of Engineering endorses researchers in engineering and technology disciplines — mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical, biomedical, computing, materials, energy systems. Same 3-year ILR path as the other national academies. Particularly strong fast-track pathway via UKRI grants, fellowships, and UK academic appointments.
What your pack must include.
- PhD or equivalent in an engineering or technology discipline
- CV structured around research impact + translational outcomes (patents, industry partnerships, deployed systems)
- Letter of personal recommendation from an eminent UK-based engineer/researcher
- Two further letters from internationally recognised figures
- Publication record in top engineering venues (IEEE Transactions, Nature Engineering, discipline leaders)
- Patents, technology transfer outcomes, or named contributions to deployed systems at scale
The signals that actually score.
- ✦Research that has translated: patents granted, startups spun out, systems deployed in production
- ✦Publications in top-quartile engineering journals with citation impact
- ✦Competitive grants from UKRI (EPSRC, Innovate UK), industry, or equivalent international funders
- ✦Research leadership: heading a group, technical leadership on major projects
- ✦Industry collaboration and advisory roles with recognised engineering firms
Where applications fail.
- ×Pure-academia framing without the translation / impact story RAEng rewards
- ×Patent filings without evidence of prosecution or deployment
- ×UK recommender omitted — same mandatory requirement as the other academies
- ×Industry consultancy experience substituted for research output
- ×Applying via peer review when a named fellowship or grant makes you fast-track-eligible
